The most ancient treatment for infections came from the Egyptians around 1550 B.C. They used a mixture of lard, honey, and lint which was used as an ointment for for wounds. According to Dr. John McKenna, "We know that honey is antibacterial - it kills bacterial cells by drawing water out of them. In addition, the enzyme inhibine, which is found in honey, converts glucose and oxygen into hydrogen peroxide, a well-known disinfectant" (1). In fact, "honey helps replace missing enzymes for nearly all purposes throughout the entire body" (2). This is only true, however, of honey that has never been heated over about 100 degrees Fahrenheit during processing and packaging. Since enzymes power all immune system functions, it stands to reason that unheated honey would be a powerful way to boost the immune system.
Copper was used widely by the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, often in combination with honey. Copper, zinc, and silver all have documented anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal properties. In fact, "All three metals can and do bind to free sulfur residues in enzymes that facilitate oxygen transfer through the bacterial cell membrane and hence allow respiration of the micro-organism. By binding to these sulfur groups in the active site of the enzyme the enzyme is blocked from binding oxygen and transporting it to the cell inside. Hence the bacteria cannot undertake respiration and die. Because the cells of the human body are markedly different from the cells of these bacteria the metals are inert towards it and as described above are indeed beneficial. This specific binding to the oxygen carrying enzyme is augmented by the metals ability to bind to other proteins and enzymes within the micro-organism and cause the proteins to change shape and indeed crystallize hence, rendering them inactive, again causing cell death of the micro-organism. This mode of action is thought to also explain the anti-viral activity of these solvated metal ions" (3).
Many essential oils are known to have anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral activity. "Europeans began producing essential oils in the 12th century. During the Plague of the Middle Ages, a band of theives robbed the dead without becoming infected. Finally, four thieves were captured in Marseilles, France, and charged with robbing the dead and dying victims of the plague. At the trial, the magistrate offered them leniency if they would reveal how they managed to avoid contracting the dreaded infection, in spite of their close contact with infected corpses. It was disclosed that these thieves were perfumers and spice traders who had rubbed themselves with a concoction of aromatic herbs (cinnamon, clove, and oregano), which was the source of their immunity" (4).
This is just the
tip of the iceberg. Many more remedies exist, and they are very
effective. Garlic is both antibacterial and
antifungal. Elderberry efectively combats viruses.
Echinacea is a blood purifier and Goldenseal causes the cells to
produce interferon, which signals the immune system when a virus is
present so it can be destroyed. Below we have a variety of
garlic, elderberry, echinacea and goldenseal products to assist you
with maintaining your health and well being.
