Meet Your Inner Guide

The fact that every human being has intuition is a fact. Some people choose to ignore the thoughts which pop into their minds unbidden, or the strong gut feelings which urge them toward a particular path. Those thoughts and feelings are not randomly generated by our minds. They come from somewhere.
You need to give some thought to how you want to approach your intuitive work. Do you want to approach it from a purely mechanistic, scientific point of view, or do you want to incorporate your spiritual beliefs into your intuitive work? You can do it either way, but many people find it more meaningful to recognize the spiritual underpinnings of their intuition.
Let me start out by saying that you can recognize and utilize the spiritual nature of your intuitions no matter what religion or kind of spirituality you embrace. Almost every religion or spiritual tradition acknowledges that there is some kind of direct communication between the spirit and humans.
Here is a meditation to help you meet your inner advisor. If you choose to approach your intuitive work only from a scientific, mechanistic viewpoint, you will view this exercise only as a tool to help you work with and manipulate your intuitive abilities. If you choose to also acknowledge the spiritual underpinnings of your intuitive abilities, then your inner advisor will be understood as a real spiritual entity who counsels you, brings you intuitive information that you need, and guides you toward situations which wil bring you the most success and which represent the highest good. Some people are even able to combine both viewpoints, which in my opinion is the best way. This viewpoint recognizes that science and spirituality are one in the same, that they are just two ways of looking at the same phenomenon and both are valid.
However, this is your decision to make. As you do this exercise throughout the week, do it without making a judgment as to whether the information you are receiving is personalized, or just cold, hard intuitive facts. Get a feel for whether you are just receiving electromagnetically generated sensory input, or whether this input is conducted to you by a spiritual guide.
The following exercises should be read into a tape recorder and played back so you can give your full attention to following the suggestions. Try to find a time when it is quiet in the house, and you can be alone. Many people find that the only time they can achieve this is either while they are in the bathtub, first thing in the morning before everyone is up, or the last thing at night after everyone goes to bed. However, if you have the opportunity for a few minutes alone during the middle of the day, that would really be great.
Find a place to lie
down where
you can get comfortable. If you are going to be in the bathtub,
you
may want to get a rolled-up towel or tub pillow to put behind your head
or
neck so you can be comfortable. Otherwise, find a semi-reclining
position,
or lie on your back on the bed or a carpeted floor.
First, Relax Yourself
Close your eyes. Get your body in as comfortable a position as possible. It is helpful if you are able to separate your arms and legs from your body just slightly, so they are not touching each other or the rest of your body. We usually carry tension in our shoulder area, so after you lie down, reposition your shoulders so that they are not scrunched up, but are down and relaxed.
Now, go inside yourself. Concentrate only on what is going on inside your body. By doing this, you will eventually shut out all external stimuli. Listen to and feel your breathing. In and out. In and out. Allow your breathing to become slow, and steady. Spend a few moments just experiencing this. (pause)
Pretend that there is a blanket folded up and lying on the floor below your feet. Imagine this blanket coming up and covering your feet. The blanket is warm, soft, and feels good to your feet. As the blanket comes up and covers a part of your body, that body part immediately relaxes. Feel the release in your feet. Feel the warmth that covers them, as if they are soaking in an exquisite bath of warm water. You can either visualize the blanket covering your feet, or visualize an inviting pool of warm water covering them. (pause)
Now imagine that the blanket is coming up further, covering your knees and everything below. Feel the release of tension in your knees. Feel the warmth that covers them, and the bath of warm water that relaxes them. (pause)
Now imagine that the blanket is coming up further, covering you all the way up to the waist. Feel the release of tension in your lower back, pelvic area, and thighs. Feel the warmth that covers them, and the bath of warm water that relaxes them. (pause)
Now imagine that the blanket is coming up further, covering you all the way up over your chest. Imagine the blanket comes up just under your armpits. Feel the release of tension in your upper back and chest area. Feel the warmth that covers them, and the bath of warm water that relaxes them. (pause)
Now imagine that the blanket is coming up further, that it covers your shoulders and arms. Feel the release of tension in your upper back and chest area. Feel the warmth that covers them, and the bath of warm water that relaxes them. (pause)
Now imagine that the blanket is coming up to the top of your head, covering you from head to toe. This blanket does not impede the flow of your breath, it is not tight or restricting in any way. It is gentle and relaxing. Feel the warmth that covers your entire body, and the bath or warm water that your entire body is floating in, relaxing every muscle. (pause)
Now, visualize any negative thoughts, feelings, or tension being dissolved by the water. Visualize it draining out of your body through your fingertips and toes, leaking out and being cleansed and taken away by the warm water you are floating in. Sense your body becoming softer, lighter, and freer. (pause)
Now turn your attention back to your breathing. It is slow, light, and rhythmic. Center yourself inside, where your breathing is.
Now imagine a place where you feel calm and peaceful, a place that you like. It may be a place you have been before, or a place you make up, or a combination. You may imagine a room in a house, a place by the sea, a place under a tree or in a meadow. Anywhere that is pleasing to you. Allow the details of the special place to come into your consciousness slowly and naturally. Permit yourself to be surprised by what you discover at this special place. Walk through your special place. Notice the details, the things which are pleasing and delightful to you about the place. This place should make you feel happy, at peace, and it should be a place that you want to go often. Find a place to sit down in your special place.
Imagine some kind of path leading to your special place. A path that someone can enter your special place from. Also imagine a place for you to sit with someone. Perhaps two comfortable chairs, two large fluffy pillows, two rocks by the sea side, or any place that you could comfortably have a conversation with someone.
In a minute, you are going to meet your inner guide. This guide is someone or something who is very wise, who cares about you deeply, but who does not take authority away from you. Your guide is someone who suggests an action to you, but you are ultimately the one who decides what you are going to do about it.
Instead of choosing ahead of time who or what your guide will look like, let yourself be surprised. Your guide can be a man, woman, child, animal, natural object, or whatever presents itself.
Look at the path I told you to imagine, the one leading to your special place. Notice that someone or something is moving along the path. They are still far away, only a small dot on the horizon. Watch as they move closer along the path. You still can't make out what they look like yet. A sense of anticipation comes over you. Wait with excitement as the guide comes toward you.
Finally, the guide is close enough for you to see some details. Is it a man, a woman, or a child? Is it an animal? Is it someone you know? Or is it someone that is new to you? Allow yourself to notice the details about the guide.
If the guide is a person, greet them as they come near you. Shake their hand and introduce yourself. Allow the guide to tell you a little about themselves. If the guide is an animal, gently and slowly sense their presence. Ask them if they will allow you to touch them. Feel the softness of their skin, fur or feathers. Or the roughness, as the case may be.
Ask the guide to tell you why they are with you. Why did they choose to guide you? What information are they here to bring you? Ask them to share with you a way that you can know when the thoughts or feelings you are having are from them? Ask your guide any question that you want. Ask them to help you remember things that you might forget during the day. Ask them to give you new ideas, or help make difficult decisions.
Let yourself be surprised by the answers you receive. Your guide may not always tell you what you want or expect to hear.
Thank your guide for meeting with you. Watch them leave and walk off into the distance.
Allow yourself to experience the feelings your guide left you with.
Gradually become aware
of your surroundings again. Open your eyes and slowly sit up.
