Everyone
has probably
heard that being
in the sun too long can increase your risk of skin cancer. But
did you know that for every one person who dies from skin cancer, 10
people die from diseases related to Vitamin D deficiency?
Sunshine is required to convert an enzyme in the colon into Vitamin D
so that it can be used. Besides, skin cancer is rarely fatal, but
breast and colon cancer can be.Did you know that high levels of Vitamin D can reduce your risk of breast cancer by 50%? Even a modest increase in sunshine exposure can reduce your risk by 10% or more. It can also reduce the risk of all types of cancer. Vitamin D helps to regulate the production of cells, something that is absent when cancer cells start to proliferate. It also reduces heart disease risk, gum disease, and many conditions in which inflammation is a factor. Increased calcium and Vitamin D intake has been correlated with reduced risk of colon cancer. Diabetes, high blood pressure, schizophrenia, and multiple schlerosis also benefit from the vitamin. People with Alzheimer's have often been found to have Vitamin D deficiency. Sunshine energizes the body's electrical system, thereby helping to balance energy and remove blockages. Doing Qigong or other exercises designed to remove energy blockages while exposing skin to the sun could be even more beneficial. Vitamin D also increases neurotransmitter levels. Summer sunlight increases brain serotonin levels twice as high as winter sunlight, a finding compatible with both bright light in the visible spectrum and vitamin D affecting mood. That's because in the summer, there are more UV(B) Rays available. Also, how far north you live affects the amount of UV(B) rays available. So, if you want to improve the symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder, Depression, even PMS, spend more time in the sun. And although Vitamin D supplementation can help, good old sunshine produces more Vitamin D faster than a supplement, and your body only converts as much Vitamin D as it needs when exposed to sun, whereas with a supplement you could take too much. Also, for at least 10 to 15 minutes of the time you are in the sun, take off your glasses or sunglasses and allow the light to enter directly through the eyes. Glasses sometimes keep the UV(B) rays out. Sunlight through the eyes helps to regulate the pineal gland, which is near the eyes. Try NOT to wear sunscreen. I know, I know, the whole medical establishment is screaming at you to use it, but the chemicals in the sunscreen can actually cause cancer themselves, and they do prevent the UV(B) rays from entering the skin, which is what you NEED if you are trying to convert sunlight to Vitamin D. Besides, the food we eat causes more skin cancer than the sun. See Dr. Joseph Mercola's article "Sunblock Can Actually Increase your Cancer Risk" To maximize the healthful benefits of the sun without incurring the possible health risks, start with just 10 minutes of sun exposure per day and build up from there, and decrease your intake of omega-6 fatty acids, thereby reducing your risk of skin cancer.
