Unschooling

What is "unschooling?"  Unschooling is what happens when human beings learn outside the four walls of a school building, at the time and place of their choosing and with the subjects and materials of their choice.  It is when children are not forced to learn according to some pre-determined timetable or set of learning objectives.  It is a form of education which takes into account and fulfills each child's individual needs and goals, and trusts in the ability of each child to direct his or her own education.  It is creative, spontaneous, and remarkable...unlike a structured school education.

Did you know that Thomas Jefferson believed that the "common people" were not intelligent enough to govern themselves?  "His plan was to create a series of public schools that would prepare an elite for their role as the bureaucracy of the republic".

The purpose of public school education was to indoctrinate a group of individuals so that they conformed to government ideas, and then put these people in place as the "professionals" who would lead society and govern those of us supposedly too stupid to take care of ourselves.   In our society, only those with "professional" credentials are accepted as knowledgeable and respected as authorities in their subject areas.  Only grades and tests and diplomas mean anything.  Society still believes that without a formal education, an individual will be a failure.

We reject tests and credentials and assert that only through personal experience can one really be "knowledgeable." We also assert that every individual has the right to create the kind of life he or she wants, and that life does not have to resemble what other people are doing. A person has the ability to create a life where he can work for himself, and line his own pockets rather than the pockets of corporate America.  See our own attempt to do this on our Independent Income Generation Page

In the past, our children have participated in both traditional structured homeschool, and have attended private school.  But after experiencing both of those options, we have learned the value of child-directed study and learning.  Both my children, ages 23 and 17, having been homeschooled in the beginning and then completing several grades at a private elementary school, now have chosen to go back to unschooling.  We look forward to an exciting new life, without boundaries.

Here is a link to Steve Solomon's page. Steve is an example of someone who has chosen to do exactly what he wants with his life, making his work is play, and being personally committed to the freedom to live life as you choose. He states that his life choice is "Comfortable and creative unemployment," which doesn't mean he doesn't make money, it just means he doesn't work for anyone else.  I think you'll find his site interesting.  He also has what he calls the "Soil and Health Library" which consists of many public domain and out-of-print books that can be downloaded.  Of particular interest to me was the "Spiritual Freedom Library."  Check it out.
